Perceive Biotherapeutics (Perceive Bio) has concluded enrolment ahead of targets in its Phase IIa JOURNEY clinical study evaluating VOY-101, an experimental gene therapy for geographic atrophy (GA) caused by dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
The open-label, multicentre study enrolled 94 eyes across 47 participants, surpassing the original target of 62 eyes.

Investigators administered a single intravitreal injection at the Phase II dose established during Phase I into one randomly assigned eye.
The untreated fellow eye serves as a within-patient control to account for age, environmental exposure, and genetics. Secondary endpoints track visual acuity, macular neovascularisation, safety, and lesion size across 24 months.
Perceive Bio CEO Angela Macfarlane said: “Completing enrolment in JOURNEY, and exceeding our target, reflects the urgency felt by patients living with geographic atrophy and the strong engagement of our investigators and study sites.
“VOY-101 is designed as a one-time treatment that restores the body’s own protective regulation of the complement pathway in patients at elevated risk of progression. Approved therapies for GA require ongoing intravitreal injections, and outside the US patients still have no approved treatment option.
“We believe a durable, genetically targeted gene therapy has the potential to transform how this disease is managed, and we look forward to reporting topline 15-month results in late 2027.”
Alongside the clinical trial update, Perceive Bio appointed Tony Gibney to its board of directors as an independent director.
Gibney brings over 30 years of operational and advisory experience across biotechnology finance, corporate strategy, and business development.
Gibney said: “Perceive’s genetic-driven science and one-time, intravitreal injection gene therapy design have the potential to address that need by targeting CFH directly and thereby disrupting the natural progression of GA at its source.”
VOY-101 utilises a recombinant adeno-associated virus to express a protective Complement Factor H variant, designed to restore complement regulation and decelerate disease progression.
