PrairieCare, a psychiatric health system in Minnesota, has opened a 30,000ft2 expansion of its inpatient psychiatric hospital in Brooklyn Park.

The expansion will add 30 new beds and is claimed to be the largest expansion of mental health beds for adolescents and young adults in Minnesota in decades.

These new beds are expected to help PrairieCare serve about 1,000 patients every year with mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, trauma, and mood disorders.

It is part of PrairieCare’s strategy to address the mental health crisis in Minnesota, where there is a shortage of psychiatric inpatient beds for youth due to a state-wide moratorium on building or expanding hospital beds along with financing and labour constraints.

Ryan Companies completed the construction in a timeframe of under one year.

PrairieCare CEO Todd Archbold said: “As mental health care leaders in this region, we have a responsibility to do everything we can to address this crisis and help more families find hope and healing.

“Too many young people are stuck boarding in emergency departments for days or even weeks, waiting for a mental health treatment option that isn’t there.

“Our expansion will help alleviate this frustration for families and get them the immediate care they deserve.”

PrairieCare is hosting a grand opening celebration this week, as well as a community showcase with other providers, an open house, and a hiring event for health care professionals.
