The Government of Queensland in Australia has awarded over A$1.5bn ($1bn) in tenders for expanding The Prince Charles Hospital and Redcliffe Hospital.

The investment will see the delivery of hundreds of new beds in the northside of Brisbane and provide Queenslanders with easy access to healthcare services.

Under the A$360m Prince Charles Hospital expansion project, satellite medical imaging, and pharmacy and pathology services will be installed.

The project also includes the development of a new emergency department, with 53 additional treatment spaces and the delivery of 93 new beds.

This funding comprises A$60m of support for two extra operating theatres, a new paediatric outpatient service with 16 treatment spaces, and a Satellite Central Sterilisation Service Department.

As part of the A$1.148bn Redcliffe Hospital expansion project, 204 new hospital beds will be added.

The project also includes the expansion of medical imaging, pharmacy, and pathology areas, as well as extra operating theatres, emergency department treatment spaces, and birthing suites.

It will also involve the development of endoscopy, outpatient consult, and diagnostic rooms.

In addition, this funding involves A$88m of support for a single integrated facility that will house the ambulatory care and clinical services department.

Initial site establishment works for both expansion projects will start next year.

The Prince Charles Hospital Expansion is anticipated to be concluded in 2027 while the Redcliffe Hospital Expansion is set to be completed a year after.

Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said: “Our government has now awarded nearly A$6bn in tenders to expand some of Queensland’s busiest hospitals.

“This investment is a signature component of Queensland’s Health and Hospital Plan, delivering new operating theatres, treatment spaces and, most importantly, more beds.

“Additional beds at both The Prince Charles and Redcliffe Hospitals will mean more Queenslanders have access to the healthcare they need, closer to home.”
