Construction and technology group STRABAG, through its Slovakia-based subsidiary STRABAG Pozemné staviteľstvo, has been selected as the general contractor for the reconstruction and extension of the F.D. Roosevelt University Hospital in Slovakia.

The contract awarded to STRABAG is valued at approximately €297m ($322m).

This significant redevelopment project involves demolishing outdated structures and revamping the hospital site with contemporary buildings, outdoor facilities, and landscaped green spaces.

STRABAG estimates that the construction phase of the hospital will span nearly five and a half years, with the project’s culmination anticipated by the end of 2029.

Located in Slovakia’s Banská Bystrica, the F.D. Roosevelt University Hospital is undergoing a transformation with an overall investment of €442m. This project is being funded by the EU.

Upon completion, the 771-bed hospital will offer centralised and digitalised care equipped with the latest medical technology.

According to STRABAG, the hospital’s layout will be split into two main sections, including North and South, separated by a central road that will be converted into a verdant boulevard.

The hospital’s northern area will house a new training centre, an infectious diseases building, administrative offices, as well as space for parking.

Besides, the southern section will see the construction of an 11-storey main building featuring an x-shaped design atop a base and spanning a gross floor area of 91,000m².

STRABAG CEO Klemens Haselsteiner said: “We are extremely pleased to have been awarded this complex turnkey project in our neighbouring country. It is an opportunity for us to demonstrate our innovative technological expertise with our local teams.”

The construction company stated that it is implementing LEAN Construction principles and Building Information Modelling (BIM) to optimise the construction process for the hospital.

F.D. Roosevelt University Hospital has selected architectural company SIEBERT + TALAŠ to oversee the entire planning and design related work of the project.

SIEBERT + TALAŠ is also a consortium partner, responsible for planning and design aspects during the construction phase, STRABAG added.
