Not-for-profit health care system Sutter Health has initiated the construction of the Sutter Advanced Neuroscience Complex, a development aimed at enhancing neurological and neurosurgical care in Northern California, US.
The five-storey, 129,000ft² facility, scheduled to open in 2028, represents a $442m investment in brain health and will centralise care delivery, diagnostics, and research at one site in San Francisco.
The complex, located at the intersection of César Chávez and Valencia streets, will consolidate around 80 physicians and clinicians specialising in a variety of neurological fields.
Sutter Health President and CEO Warner Thomas said: “CPMC has cared for this community since the 1850s, and we’re proud to continue that legacy by investing in a destination for neurological care that will serve patients and families locally and across the region.”
In addition to comprehensive services such as neurosurgery, neurology, imaging, infusion, rehabilitation, lab and an ambulatory surgery centre, patients will have direct access to research and clinical trials.
The Ray Dolby Brain Health Center and the Forbes Norris MDA/ALS Research and Treatment Center, two of the health system’s programmes, will be relocated to the new facility.

By GlobalDataAdditionally, the site will feature underground parking and, by 2027, the adjacent CPMC Mission Bernal campus hospital will be enhanced with two neurological intervention suites.
These suites will provide imaging capabilities and support the fast detection and minimally invasive treatment of neurological conditions.
This project is a component of Sutter Health’s strategic plan to invest nearly $1bn in San Francisco’s healthcare infrastructure over the next five years.
The strategy includes the launch of new medical programmes and the improvement of patient experiences, such as the recently introduced Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery programme.
In April, Sutter Health announced the development of the Advanced Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Care Complex in downtown Sacramento, California, US.
