Sutter Health is investing $442m to establish a new neurological and neurosurgical care complex in the Mission Bernal neighbourhood of San Francisco, US.

The five-storey, 129,000ft² facility will be located adjacent to the existing California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) Mission Bernal Campus hospital.

This development is part of Sutter’s strategic vision to increase access to improved healthcare in the city.

Planned in collaboration with Sutter’s West Bay Medical Group physicians, the new Mission Bernal Care Complex is anticipated to open its doors to patients in 2028.

It represents the initial phase of Sutter’s broader growth strategy for San Francisco, which will see nearly $1bn invested in the city over the next five years.

The complex, to be built on the former St. Luke’s Hospital site, will offer a range of services, including neurology, rehabilitation, neurosurgery, lab, imaging, infusion, and an ambulatory surgery centre.

Patients will benefit from access to research and clinical trials, with the Ray Dolby Brain Health Center and Forbes Norris MDA/ALS Research and Treatment Center relocating to the new facility.

The move aims to consolidate similar services, fostering collaboration among clinicians and enhancing patient care.

In addition, the complex will feature underground parking for added convenience.

Sutter’s Greater San Francisco Market president Christina Oh said: “Patients will be able to come to this location and visit their specialist, receive diagnostic lab and imaging, [and] outpatient procedures all in one complex.

“Having all these services under one roof and being able to provide advanced, comprehensive care for patients and their families will create a more convenient, coordinated experience.”

Under its long-term goal, Sutter Health also looks to add two neurological intervention suites at the CPMC Mission Bernal Campus hospital by 2027.

These suites will be equipped with the latest imaging technology, enabling rapid detection and the minimally invasive treatment of neurological emergencies, such as strokes, aneurysms, and blood clots in the brain.

The Monteagle building on the Mission Bernal Campus will also undergo remodelling to provide a modern care environment for primary care and women’s OB/GYN clinics, with completion expected in summer 2025.
