A consortium led by European engineering consultancy company Sweco has been selected to develop a large-scale hospital complex in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg.
The Südspidol hospital has been commissioned by Centre Hospitalier Emile Mayrisch (CHEM).

Expected to be fully operational by 2033, Südspidol is intended to meet the healthcare needs of the southern Luxembourg population by providing modern facilities and services.
The hospital will feature a gross floor area of 121,000m² and is planned to house around 600 beds, most of which will be single rooms.
Sweco will manage the full range of design phases of the hospital, with a focus on integrating technology and nature with healthcare.
The company will use its multidisciplinary approach and coordinate with more than 50 stakeholders from various countries.

By GlobalDataApart from the design phases, Sweco’s capabilities include advising on sustainability standards, overseeing the permitting processes, managing tendering, budget control, construction management and commissioning.
Sweco Belgium Business Area president Erwin Malcorps said: “Sweco is a market leader in technology consulting for the healthcare sector and we are excited to use our expertise to support CHEM in establishing the new Südspidol hospital in Luxembourg.
“This is an ambitious project aiming to obtain a DGNB certificate for sustainability, and we will implement state-of-the-art energy-efficient solutions to meet that certification.”
The consortium includes Brussels-based SWECO Belgium, SWECO in Bremen and a temporary partnership between Gortemaker Algra Feenstra Architects (GAF) in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and Schemel Wirtz Architectes Associes (SWAA) in Bertrange, Luxembourg.
The consortium’s proposal for the new hospital was selected after the completion of a competitive dialogue.
According to CHEM, the Südspidol project will be a cornerstone in Luxembourg’s healthcare system and cover all the necessary healthcare requirements of the population, working in collaboration with other organisations in the country’s health system.
