Tampa General Hospital (TGH) has opened the dedicated Military & Veteran Primary Care Center (MVP) in Florida, US, aimed at providing comprehensive healthcare services to veterans, reservists, and National Guard members.

The MVP clinic, which is built by converting a portion of Tampa General Medical Group location on South Lois Avenue, features a range of services encompassing behavioural health, primary care, laboratory and pharmacy services.

It also offers a care navigator specialised in veteran healthcare resources.

This initiative is in response to the identified gaps in healthcare delivery for the military population in the greater Tampa area.

Tampa General Hospital executive vice-president and chief ambulatory officer Adam Smith said: “We have developed this MVP centre in partnership with advocacy organisations to help establish a sense of unity and shared understanding between patients and providers, and to increase access to quality healthcare for these extraordinary patients.”

TGH collaborated with community partners such as the Veteran Team Member Resource Group and Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Program.

Home Base has been instrumental in providing specialised training for MVP staff and clinicians to better serve military patients, particularly in building resilience against mental health challenges like post-traumatic stress, depression, and anxiety.

The MVP clinic’s design and services were developed with input from Home Base and veteran team members to create a clinical environment that is sensitive to the experiences of military patients.

A dedicated nurse navigator at the clinic will focus on coordinating comprehensive care, patient education, and connecting patients to resources and advocacy, including specialised mental health services for complex diagnoses.

Tampa General Medical Group vice-president Dr Karna Patel said: “Tampa General is passionate about supporting our area’s military and veteran population through a broad range of targeted programmes.”

The MVP Care Center began welcoming patients in February 2025 and plans to implement services in phases.

Initially, the clinic is exclusively for veterans, reservists, and National Guard members, with the intention to extend services to their family members in the future.
