The University of Louisville (UofL) Health has announced the opening of its UofL Health – South Hospital in Bullitt County, Kentucky, US, after completing the expansion.

The open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony will celebrate the opening of the newly expanded hospital.

This project, which began in early 2022, marks a significant transformation from a medical centre to a full-service hospital, offering a wide range of health care services to the community.

As per the information available on the UofL website, the 100,000ft² expansion has increased the facility’s size threefold, allowing for the addition of approximately 30,000ft² of new space on the first floor.

This includes two new operating rooms, bringing the total to six, as well as a new centralised sterile processing area, a cardiac catheterisation lab, an expanded emergency department, a two-storey entrance and lobby, a dining room, and a dedicated support space.

On the second and third floors, the hospital has added a ten-bed intensive care unit, 30 medical/surgical patient rooms, 20 future patient rooms, and a new laboratory and pharmacy, along with spaces for cardiopulmonary and respiratory therapy.

The expansion is set to enhance the hospital’s emergency capabilities, increase surgical and outpatient services, and create more job opportunities.

Courier Journal quoted UofL Health – South Hospital CEO Dorie Shelburne as saying: “This community has needed and wanted services in their community and it has been such a blessing for UofL Health to be able to provide resources of the highest of quality […] it’s just going to be an amazing service for Bullitt County and I can’t wait.”

The facility is situated on a 19-acre campus and serves a rapidly growing population in Bullitt County and the surrounding areas, including Southern Jefferson County and neighbouring counties.

It has been expanded as part of the UofL Health’s commitment to support ‘Medically Underserved Areas’, such as Bullitt County, and bring extensive care closer to the residents.

With the nearest facilities for in-patients more than 20 minutes away, UofL Health identified a need for more accessible services for the over 80,000 Bullitt County residents.
