The board of directors of US-based health system UW Health has approved plans to expand two of its hospitals in Madison, Wisconsin.
The expansion projects will add surgical, emergency and inpatient capacity to the two hospitals.
The expansion at University Hospital will add a six-storey structure with 22 emergency department rooms, 48 inpatient rooms and 22 flexible care beds.
At East Madison Hospital, the project will add six operating rooms, 20 post-anaesthesia care rooms, 40 recovery rooms, 14 flexible care rooms and 20 rooms for the emergency department.
The new facilities are intended to help UW Health accommodate increasing number of patients and improve its patient care services.
UW Health chief operating officer Dr Peter Newcomer said: “We have an opportunity to meet the needs of these patients, but to do that, we need to grow.
“This growth will also allow us to continue to serve our current patients more effectively as this exciting work will improve the flow through our health system for all patients.”
The construction cost for the projects is estimated at between $180m and $220m, with up to $310m authorised for any associated costs.
Both projects are expected to be completed by 2026 subject to local government approvals.
Newcomer added: “Whether it’s our emergency rooms, our operating rooms, our hospitals or our outpatient care facilities, they are all very busy today with the challenge of thousands of new patients on the horizon.
“Through expansions such as those announced today and the 2024 opening of our Eastpark Medical Center, we are excited to meet that challenge.”
Based in Madison, UW Health aims to ‘serve through medical innovation and unparalleled compassion’ by providing ‘expertise and quality care’ to patients and families.
The health system works in partnership with the University of Wisconsin and the University of Illinois College of Medicine.
