Australia’s Victoria state government has approved plans for a private medical facility in Parkville, an area of Melbourne that hosts many leading biomedical companies and research facilities.

The hospital will offer diagnostic imaging, pathology and a range of other medical services.

The site will include seven operating rooms, ten intensive care rooms and enough beds for more than 200 patients.

Local authorities and residents offered feedback on the plans during the planning phase, which led to design revisions.

These alterations included modifying the building’s shape and setbacks to enhance sunlight access, as well as ensuring better movement around the site for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

The proposal was expedited under the government’s Development Facilitation Program, which aims to simplify planning for developments of state significance.

The programme supports projects that stimulate economic activity, generate employment and expand public infrastructure.

Healthcare developments fall under its remit, along with housing and other community needs.

Once completed, the Metro Tunnel will connect Parkville to the city’s train network for the first time. This is expected to benefit healthcare professionals, patients and their families.

The tunnel is due to open later this year, a year earlier than originally scheduled.

Victoria’s minister for planning Sonya Kilkenny said: “We’ve given the green light for a new hospital to be built in Victoria’s world-leading biomedical precinct.

“The new hospital is consistent with the plans for the Parkville precinct, an established research cluster on the doorstep of the Central Business District for education, health, professional and technical industries.”

Last month, the Victorian government inaugurated the expanded and upgraded Maryborough and District Hospital facility.

The A$115m ($73.4m) facility aims to provide residents of Maryborough and the surrounding region with access to up-to-date treatments closer to home.
