Victoria Hospital on the Isle of Bute has unveiled its newly installed birthing pool, to enable water birth for women in labour.

The facility was officially launched this month by NHS Highland midwifery director Isla Barton, providing expectant mothers on the island with an additional choice for their birthing experience.

Water birth has been shown to alleviate pain as well as provide relaxation during labour.

In addition, the buoyancy of the water helps would-be mothers feel more supported and in control.

The Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) expressed gratitude to the Bute Bike Shed for offering their services to finish the final decorative touches to the birthing pool.

Commenting on the new facility, Barton said: “I am delighted to have had the pleasure to officially open the Isle of Bute water birth facility and meet with our fantastic team of rural midwives.

“Across Argyll and Bute, our midwives work hard to continuously develop and improve maternity services that are safe and personalised, that put the needs of the women, their baby, and family at the heart of the quality care that they deliver.

“Bute midwives have worked really hard to ensure that the installation was completed without much disruption, whilst continuing to support women in labour at the unit.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff, patients, and visitors for their patience and for their support throughout the process.”
