The Western Australia (WA) Government has sought expressions of interest (EOI) from managing contractors to design and build the Women and Babies Hospital project.

This EOI documentation can be accessed on Tenders WA, with EOI applications set to close on 12 March 2024.

The project, entailing an investment of approximately A$1.8bn ($1.17bn), will relocate services from King Edward Memorial Hospital to a new hospital built within the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct, with obstetrics, gynaecology, and neonate services.

It will encompass the expansion of healthcare services at Osborne Park Hospital, as well as neonatal services at Perth Children’s Hospital.

In addition, the project will include an expansion of the obstetrics and gynaecology services, birthing suites, and theatres at Osborne Park Hospital.

A new family birthing centre is also planned to be constructed adjacent to the revamped Osborne Park Hospital.

The government estimates that this project will generate over 1,400 local jobs throughout the construction phase and offer opportunities for local suppliers and contractors.

WA State and Industry Development, Jobs and Trade Minister Roger Cook said: “The new Women and Babies Hospital is one of the most significant health investments for our state and will deliver exceptional healthcare for women and babies. The new hospital will be modern and fit for purpose and next door to the state’s largest tertiary hospital.

“The call for expressions of interest for a managing contractor is the chance for industry and the government to work together to deliver this landmark project for all Western Australians.”

In April 2023, the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct was chosen as the preferred location for the Women and Babies Hospital, replacing the earlier proposed Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre site.

The decision came after a comprehensive review of the Business Case and Project Definition Plan, which revealed that the QEII site presented numerous risks, potential delays, and would cause patient disruption.
