The state government of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, has announced the start of construction of the Warrawong Community Health Centre.
Located at the former Port Kembla Hospital site, the centre will consolidate various speciality services, including child and family health, Aboriginal maternal infant health, and community nursing.
It will feature courtyards for outdoor education and therapy, as well as dedicated accessible parking and landscaping incorporating native species of flora.
Health Minister Ryan Park and Planning and Public Spaces Minister and Wollongong Member Paul Scully participated in a sod-turning event to mark the start of the facility’s construction.
Park said: “It’s fantastic to see construction underway for this new Community Health Centre, which will deliver improved access to out-of-hospital care and support, close to home, for those who need it in our community.
“This new facility will make a significant difference for patients, their families, and staff by co-locating a range of support health services to create a more seamless flow of health service provision for all.”

By GlobalDataScully said: “The new Warrawong Community Health Centre is an important part of the network of health infrastructure for the Illawarra that is being built or renewed.
“After many years of advocating for this new Community Health Centre, Wollongong’s southern suburbs will be provided with a modern healthcare hub, bringing much-needed healthcare services together under one roof.”
The centre is part of a wider investment of more than A$780m ($501.68m) in Illawarra’s health infrastructure, supported by both the NSW and Commonwealth governments.
Stephen Edwards Constructions has secured the contract for the project, with an anticipated completion date in 2026.
Earlier this week, the NSW Government began the construction of the Westmead Integrated Mental Health Complex in Western Sydney.
The complex will be NSW’s largest health facility upon its completion, which is due in 2027.
