Master planning for the new A$1.3bn ($849m) hospital in Bankstown in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, is set to begin this month.

This hospital will be located on the Technical and Further Education (TAFE) campus in Bankstown’s City Campus Development (CBD) in Sydney’s southwest.

It will offer easy access to public transport.

The master planning for the new Bankstown Hospital is set to outline the site's vision, including the continued presence of TAFE NSW, a vocational education and training provider in Australia.

It will pinpoint the locations for clinical services, parking, and areas designated for future expansions.

This plan will also detail how the hospital will integrate with the community and local transport networks.

The new Bankstown Hospital will offer services across multiple specialities such as cardiology, emergency medicine, intensive care, women's and children's health, aged care, mental health and drug health.

According to the NSW government, the detailed scope of the new hospital will further be finalised through the planning process.

The regional government will seek community input and launch expressions of interest for the project's Community Reference Group in the upcoming months.

This hospital's location presents opportunities for collaboration with health, education, and research partners, including TAFE NSW and universities, to enhance local learning and support the state's skills needs.

TAFE NSW will engage with staff and students regarding the relocation of its facilities during the hospital's construction.

Services at the existing Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital will continue until the new hospital is completed, after which the current site will be considered for repurposing for health-related uses.

Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital currently offers a broad range of medical and surgical services, along with various speciality and sub-speciality services.

NSW Health Minister Ryan Park said: “This master plan will be developed in consultation with the local community, so we can deliver a hospital which will support the needs of this growing community well into the future.”

In separate developments, the NSW government appointed the lead design teams for the A$350m Canterbury Hospital redevelopment and the A$120m Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital overhaul.

Work on Canterbury Hospital includes upgrading the existing infrastructure and expanding the facility while Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital will receive an additional 60 beds across the two facilities.
