The Government of Queensland in Australia has announced that the Stage 1 of Logan Hospital expansion is nearing completion, with the hospital’s centrepiece building now open.  

The expanded building includes four additional floors along with hundreds of extra beds and new wards, such as a cardiac ward, a palliative care ward, a general medical ward, medical assessment and planning unit, and coronary care unit.  

All of these units have already begun welcoming patients. 

Other remaining wards within the newly opened building are expected to be fully operational by late 2024, which will further boost the hospital’s existing capacity to provide services to the growing local population. 

The government of Queensland said that it has committed more than A$1bn ($648.2m) to support the significant expansion to add over 300 beds at Logan Hospital, which is claimed to be one of the state’s busiest hospitals. 

The latest milestone signifies that a large portion of Logan Hospital’s Stage 1 expansion is now complete, while the remaining works include opening of a new intensive care unit, increased emergency department capacity, and some minor refurbishment works. 

Meanwhile, the government has also unveiled the initial artist’s impressions, revealing the design for the new clinical services building planned under the Stage 2 expansion works.  

This clinical services building will introduce 112 extra beds and new operating theatres.  

Construction work related to the Stage 2 is anticipated to commence later this year. 

The Logan Hospital expansion is being undertaken as part of the larger A$14bn Health Big Build initiative under Queensland’s Big Build programme. 

Member of Queensland Legislative Assembly for Springwood Mick de Brenni said: “Beyond the 206 additional beds and treatment spaces, Logan Hospital expansion has delivered a range of essential infrastructure advancements, including a new pathology laboratory and a medical imaging department. 

“Building upon this solid foundation, Stage 2 will feature state-of-the-art facilities, enabling Logan Hospital to continue offering our community a diverse range of elective and emergency procedures.” 

Last year in July, Logan Hospital opened a transit care hub and birthing suites as part of the hospital’s broader expansion initiative.
