Datavant and athenahealth have announced a collaboration for automating medical record requests and releases across the US.
The companies will develop an offering that will merge Datavant's clinical data access and managed release of information (ROI) services, augmented by AI-driven quality assurance, into athenahealth's cloud-based solution, athenaOne.
Participation in this offering will be voluntary, so athenahealth clients will have the opportunity to digitise record requests for diverse situations, including those from healthcare organisations, insurers, patients, public health agencies, and researchers.
The collaboration aims to combine the extensive capabilities of an electronic health record (EHR) platform with Datavant’s comprehensive ROI infrastructure.
It will provide a privacy-focused solution that is agnostic to both the purpose of exchange and the type of request.
Medical practices will have the ability to manage compliant fulfilment seamlessly within their existing workflows, with the goal of minimising administrative burdens and expediting record delivery for patients and authorised requestors.
Datavant chief strategy officer Shannon West said: “This offering is about transforming a historically manual and fragmented process into one that is seamless, secure, and digital.
“By bringing together athenahealth’s market-leading EHR platform with Datavant’s expertise in health data exchange, we are building a modern infrastructure for data exchange that allows practices to focus on care, not paperwork, while ensuring that health data gets from where it sits to where it needs to be – securely, compliantly and without friction.”
The companies aim to address challenges beyond payer–provider exchange by delivering an integrated service covering appropriate billing, compliance review, authorisation validation, request intake, and secure delivery.
athenahealth chief strategy and corporate development officer Michael Palantoni said: “Health data exchange has historically been a burdensome, manual administrative process for healthcare practices.
“By working with Datavant, we plan to deliver a technology-driven solution that automates and simplifies this complexity—reducing administrative workload, increasing compliance, and improving satisfaction for record requestors.”
