India-based Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital has launched a specialised corneal transplant centre in Ebene, Mauritius.

The site will provide advanced corneal care and innovative ophthalmic procedures to patients across Mauritius and neighbouring African countries, stated Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital.

The new facility was inaugurated by Republic of Mauritius President Dharambeer Gokhool GCSK.

This launch is claimed to be an important step in strengthening healthcare ties between India and Mauritius and aims to improve access to advanced corneal treatments in the region. The centre will offer a range of advanced procedures that were developed and refined in India.

With this launch, patients in Mauritius and nearby African nations can now access specialised corneal techniques such as Pre-Descemet’s Endothelial Keratoplasty (PDEK), Corneal Allogenic Intrastromal Ring Segment (CAIRS), and Pinhole Pupilloplasty.

Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital said that these procedures have been pioneered by its surgeons and represent India’s increasing role in global ophthalmic innovation.

At the inauguration event, Mauritian President Dharambeer Gokhool stated: “The launch of this specialised eye care centre reflects the growing collaboration between Mauritius and India in the healthcare sector. It will enhance access to advanced ophthalmic care for patients in Mauritius and the wider region.”

Dr Agarwals Group of Eye Hospitals chairman Professor Amar Agarwal highlighted the group’s vision, saying: “This launch reinforces our long-standing vision to take India’s ophthalmic innovations to the world.

"Our presence in Mauritius is not just an expansion; it is a commitment to collaborate, share knowledge, and make modern eye care accessible globally. We are deeply honoured that His Excellency, the President of Mauritius, inaugurated this facility, showing strong belief in innovation-led healthcare.”

Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital chief business officer Dr Ashar Agarwal said: “Mauritius offers a strong ecosystem for advancing healthcare delivery. Through this specialised centre, we aim to build clinical capacity, enable skill transfer, and strengthen regional access to advanced ophthalmic care. This initiative aligns with our broader mission of addressing avoidable blindness globally.”

The launch of the centre in Mauritius further expands Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital’s international presence. Comprising a chain of eye speciality hospitals, the group currently operates more than 250 centres across India, Africa, and Southeast Asia, serving over two million patients annually.

In 2023, the group's parent company Dr Agarwal’s Health Care Limited (DAHCL) received $80m from its existing investors, TPG Growth and Temasek. This funding was aimed at supporting DAHCL's expansion plans, including doubling its network and furthering its commitment to delivering advanced eye care solutions.
