Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) has completed patient enrolment in the PREVENT clinical trial, which is evaluating the use of Phasix Mesh for preventing incisional hernias.

The randomised trial has enrolled 477 patients at 32 investigational sites located in the US and Europe.

It will examine the resorbable mesh for prophylactic reinforcement to prevent incisional hernias, which often occur following abdominal surgery.

According to BD, there are currently no approved products for this purpose.

The study focuses on patients undergoing elective open midline abdominal surgery who are at high risk of developing a hernia.

Participants will be monitored up to the study's primary endpoint at 24 months, with planned longer-term follow-up extending to five years to further assess the safety and clinical results.

Evidence generated from the PREVENT trial is intended to support a future regulatory submission to the US Food and Drug Administration relating to the use of Phasix Mesh for hernia prevention.

BD surgery worldwide president Rian Seger said: “PREVENT reflects our commitment to extending the impact of advanced tissue regeneration into new areas of patient care. By evaluating Phasix Mesh in hernia prevention, we are building on decades of innovation in abdominal wall surgery and generating evidence that could help broaden the role of regenerative technologies for patients at risk of post-surgical complications.

“We are grateful to the investigators, clinical sites and patients whose participation made this achievement possible."

In May 2026, BD launched the Elyra thulium fiber laser system in the US, expanding its offerings for kidney stone care and urologic procedures.

The platform utilises TFL technology to support various procedures, including stone lithotripsy and soft tissue interventions, aiming to address key requirements in clinical urology practices.
