United Hospital, a private hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh, has opened a new centre dedicated to treat gastro-liver, biliary and pancreatic related healthcare issues and complications.  

The new centre was inaugurated on 25 February 2024 by Max Healthcare Group's Max Center of Liver and Biliary Sciences chief liver transplant surgeon and chairman Dr Subhash Gupta. 

It was also attended by key officials such as United Hospital managing director Mohammad Faizur Rahman, United Center for Gastroliver, Biliary & Pancreatic Sciences chief consultant and head Dr Hashem Rabby, among others. 

This facility, named ‘United Center for Gastroliver, Biliary & Pancreatic Sciences’, aims to provide advanced gastroenterology and hepatology services. 

In addition, the centre will leverage available science and technology to offer cost-effective healthcare services in the country. 

United Hospital has equipped the centre with a range of facilities, including a dedicated intensive care unit (ICU) for liver and gastrointestinal patients, a transplant ICU with isolation cabins, as well as a surgical ICU and high-dependency unit (HDU). 

The facility will be operated by a team of experts to handle different emergency cases, mainly related to gall bladder, liver, biliary, and pancreatic surgery.  

According to United Hospital, the deployed multi-disciplinary team includes interventional gastroenterologists, anesthesiologists,hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgeons, transplant hepatologists and critical care specialists. 

The center will also have interventional radiologists, oncologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, intensive care assistants, physiotherapist and other technicians and staff members. 

United Center for Gastroliver, Biliary & Pancreatic Sciences is expected to serve over 3,000 patients annually with various procedures.  

The Business Standard quoted Dr Subhash Gupta as saying: “Majority of liver problems can be managed with medicines and lifestyle modifications, but this is only when the illness is detected early.  

“Once the disease is advanced and has caused irreversible damage to the liver the only option that remains is that of a liver transplantation.” 

Since its inception in August 2006, United Hospital has been serving a diverse patient group in Bangladesh. It is located beside Gulshan Lake in Dhaka and features a 500-bed capacity and spanning over 450,000ft².
