The Lethem Regional Hospital in Guyana is set to receive a significant upgrade with the addition of modern operating theatres and a comprehensive imaging suite.

The hospital, which is located in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) of Guyana, is being upgraded as part of the government's broader commitment to improve healthcare infrastructure across the country.

Guyana Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony made the announcement during a recent visit in the region for inaugurating a new simulation laboratory at Lethem Regional Hospital.

Anthony stated that the construction of the new facilities is planned to commence soon, following the tendering process.

Anthony said: “We have a plan that we are working on right now and that is to extend or more so develop a brand-new section of this Lethem Hospital. So, we have just completed the designs and we have already advertised for persons to bid to do the job.”

According to a press release from Guyana’s Department of Public Information, the new imaging suite will be equipped to perform ultrasound and x-ray examinations and will also include a CT scan machine.

The availability of a CT scan machine at the Lethem Regional Hospital is expected to alleviate the financial burden on residents who currently travel to Georgetown for such services.

The machine will also allow the hospital to conduct complex imaging procedures that are often only possible at more advanced healthcare facilities.

Anthony added: “Right now, in the public sector, we have one CT scan machine at the Georgetown Hospital. We have one at Bartica and New Amsterdam, and these were through donations that we received years ago that were never put into operation until we came into government.”

The latest funding for these healthcare developments comes from the substantial G$110bn ($522m) allocated to the health ministry in budget this year, with a significant portion earmarked for infrastructure projects.

Earlier this year, the Guyana Office for Investment signed an investment agreement with Optique Eye Hospital for the development of a new speciality eye hospital.
