Health providers and Microsoft form new network for responsible AI use

TRAIN members will focus on improving AI reliability by sharing best practices and by responsible management of AI algorithms.

A consortium of healthcare providers has collaborated with Microsoft to create a Trustworthy & Responsible AI Network (TRAIN) for responsible AI principles in the healthcare sector.

This move, which aims to enhance the quality, safety, and trustworthiness of AI use in the healthcare industry, was announced at the HIMSS 2024 Global Health Conference on 11 March.

The consortium comprises various healthcare institutions, including Johns Hopkins Medicine, Mount Sinai Health System, and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Microsoft will serve as the consortium's technology-enabling partner.

In addition, the network is partnering with OCHIN, a national network of community health organisations, and TruBridge to extend benefits to a broader range of healthcare organisations, ensuring that all have the opportunity to leverage responsible AI, irrespective of their resources.

TRAIN members will focus on improving the quality and reliability of AI by sharing best practices related to AI’s use in healthcare settings and ensuring the responsible management of AI algorithms.

Crucially, the network will not involve the sharing of data or AI algorithms between member organisations or with third parties.

Instead, a secure online portal will be established for the registration of AI used in clinical care or operations.

The partnership will further offer tools to measure the outcomes of AI implementation, study the effectiveness of AI methods, and provide privacy-preserving environments for pre-deployment and post-deployment analysis.

Besides, it will provide tools that will allow users to perform bias assessments in subpopulations.

TRAIN members will also create a federated national AI outcomes registry. This registry will document real-world outcomes, focusing on the efficacy, safety, and optimisation of AI algorithms in healthcare settings.

Microsoft's global chief medical officer and vice-president of healthcare Dr David Rhew said: “By working together, TRAIN members aim to establish best practices for operationalising responsible AI, helping improve patient outcomes and safety while fostering trust in healthcare AI.”
