The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay in India has formed a strategic alliance with Blockchain for Impact (BFI), aimed at revolutionising India's public health sector.

As a global blockchain industry funder, BFI is dedicated to creating multi-sectoral collaborations that build long-term and equitable healthcare infrastructures.

This collaboration is set to confront the country's complex health challenges and is backed by a significant investment from BFI to drive healthcare innovation, ETHealthWorld.com reported.

As part of this partnership, IIT Bombay will provide its research capabilities and BFI will provide support for improving healthcare accessibility.

Over the next three years, BFI will invest $900,000 in IIT Bombay to use the latter’s expertise in developing technologies that aim to make healthcare more affordable and accessible across India.

The latest collaboration is part of a broader BFI-Biome initiative, a $15m programme which aims to unite top researchers and innovators to address urgent health challenges and advance research and innovation related to the biomedical sector.

The initiative extends to various institutions in India, including the Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani (BITS Pilani), SIIC IIT Kanpur, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and the CSIR-Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology, among others.

The organisations will be responsible for promoting translational research together that could significantly improve healthcare solutions.

Established during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, BFI was initially focused on reinforcing India's healthcare system by ensuring a consistent supply of medical essentials.

Post-pandemic, the organisation shifted its focus towards prevention and capacity building, including expanding hospital capacities, vaccinations, genome sequencing, and public awareness campaigns.

ETHealthWorld.com quoted BFI founder Sandeep Nailwal as saying: “By working with IIT Bombay, we have the opportunity to advance healthcare innovations that can positively impact public health on a massive scale.

“Together, we can support groundbreaking research projects and bring transformative solutions to communities across India and the global south.”

IIT Bombay director Professor Subhasis Chaudhuri added: “By joining forces with Blockchain for Impact, we aim to accelerate the development and deployment of healthcare innovations that have the potential to transform public health outcomes in India and beyond.”
