Medical City Heart Hospital has completed a $60m expansion project aimed at enhancing access to cardiovascular treatment in North Texas, US.

The project introduces a cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU) comprising 28 beds, raising the facility’s total bed count from 63 to 91.

The new CVICU is equipped to care for individuals who are recovering from heart attacks, cardiac surgeries, severe heart failure and other serious conditions.

Four of the new CVICU rooms have been specifically tailored for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), which is said to be a life support technique used for individuals with lung and heart failure.

The expansion also provides additional infrastructure to allow for future growth and more patient rooms as demand rises.

Medical City Healthcare claims to have spent more than $1.7bn in capital projects over the past five-year period.

These investments include building acquisitions, as well as expansions, upgrades and technology enhancements.

In July, Andrea Daniels was appointed chief executive officer (CEO) of Medical City Heart Hospital, as well as Medical City Spine Hospital.

Previously, Daniels held the post of chief operating officer at these two hospitals and has also worked as Medical City Healthcare's cardiovascular and neuroscience services division vice president.

Speaking on the completion of the expansion project, Daniels said: “The expansion is a transformative step forward for our hospital and the communities we serve.

“With additional critical care capacity, we will save more lives and continue to lead in system wide excellence and innovation in cardiovascular medicine.”

Medical City Healthcare is part of HCA Healthcare and operates 22 hospitals, 15 ambulatory surgery centres, eight off-campus emergency facilities, and has more than 4,000 physicians and 16,500 staff members across North Texas.
