New six-storey building planned for Royal Perth Hospital

The Western Australian Government has allocated A$33m for detailed project planning, financed through the Building Hospitals Fund.

The Western Australian (WA) Government has announced the construction of a new six-storey building at Royal Perth Hospital (RPH), marking a key milestone in the redevelopment of the site.

The building will be developed at S Block at the RPH site’s northern end and features two floors for a new emergency department (ED). It will also integrate with existing hospital services, including the intensive care unit.

This project follows a review of the original commitment to redevelop the RPH ED, considering scope, location, and delivery timeframe.

The review was undertaken after hospital building responsibilities shifted to the new Office of Major Infrastructure Delivery (OMID) following the March State Election.

The new design allows construction without disrupting the current ED.

Other advantages include increased bed capacity for future health needs, better ambulance access, improved public transport connections, additional short-term parking, and a larger ED with more bays.

Custom maps have been released showing site layout and hospital connections.

The WA government has allocated A$33m ($21.3m) to advance detailed planning for the project, which will be financed through the A$1.5bn Building Hospitals Fund.

Construction is scheduled to start in 2026, after design and procurement phases, with early tender advice to be released on 10 November and formal tenders to follow.

WA premier Roger Cook said: “The new emergency department at Royal Perth Hospital is part of my government's historic investment in health infrastructure - the largest in the state's history.

“The new A$1.5bn Building Hospitals Fund will deliver new hospital capacity faster and help more Western Australians access the care we need, when we need it.”

In January 2025, the state government released the tender for the Mullewa Hospital redevelopment’s main works, marking a step in the project’s progression.
