Northwell Health in the US is set to implement the ambient AI platform of Abridge across its 28 hospitals to enhance the clinical documentation of patient conversations as part of its digital transformation strategy.

This initiative aims to alleviate administrative burdens for clinicians while supporting one of the largest implementations of Epic Systems electronic health records in the country.

Northwell caters to more than three million patients each year, employing 22,000 nurses and 20,000 physicians across 1,000 outpatient facilities and hospitals in Connecticut and New York.

Abridge's platform was selected for its scalability and capacity to assist clinicians with various workflows as the implementation advances.

Northwell Health executive vice-president and chief digital officer Kristin Myers said: “As we transform care delivery at scale, we are focused on how ambient AI can reimagine the experience for both patients and clinicians.

“By leveraging Abridge's enterprise-grade technology and expertise, we're ensuring our transformation remains centred on what matters most - improving patient care and supporting the clinicians who deliver it.”

The platform assists clinicians in inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department environments, supporting over 28 languages and 55 medical specialties.

This year, Abridge is set to support clinicians in more than 50 million medical conversations.

Northwell Health executive vice-president, chief medical officer, and deputy physician in chief Jill Kalman said: “Physician wellness and resiliency is one of the most essential issues facing healthcare today, and promoting it requires redesigning how we work.

“The patient and clinician interaction is precious, and time is an invaluable resource. By reducing documentation burden, Abridge will help our clinicians return to what they do best: caring for our patients.”
