Quest Diagnostics has teamed up with Epic Systems, a provider of electronic health record (EHR) software, with an aim to enhance laboratory testing experience for providers in the US.

Under the collaboration, Epic will provide its technologies to support Project Nova, Quest’s multi-year programme designed to streamline customer-facing processes.

It will provide its diagnostic enterprise suite for laboratories, comprising Aura, Beaker Laboratory, Care Everywhere, MyChart and Resolute Professional Billing and Claims.

Epic’s solutions will be integrated across Quest’s nationwide laboratory operations.

According to Quest, the integration would streamline various processes such as account onboarding, laboratory ordering, results reporting, patient scheduling, billing, and customer service.

Quest Diagnostics president, chairman and CEO Jim Davis said: “Our collaboration with Epic will raise the bar on what health systems, providers and their patients can expect from their lab experience.

“Aligning Epic's leading healthcare technologies across our network will help us to optimise insights and experiences for customers and patients while also driving productivity across our enterprise.”

Quest stated that the collaboration improves operational agility, efficiency, and quality, offering customers faster services and access to deeper health insights.

The integration also aims to enhance patient experiences through tools such as MyChart, which will facilitate more transparent health plan reimbursements and simplify appointment scheduling at Quest's 2,000 service centres across the US.

A team with expertise in large-scale implementations will oversee the multi-year phased rollout with an aim to ensure easy transition for health systems, hospitals, and independent providers.

Furthermore, Epic’s integration will allow Quest to quickly adopt innovations such as AI and automation as they emerge.

Epic president Sumit Rana said: “Together, Epic and Quest will make testing easier to navigate for patients while reducing friction for providers and health systems.

“From creation of a single comprehensive test list to a better patient experience with MyChart and more, this is an opportunity to transform the healthcare experience at a national scale.”

Earlier this year, Quest acquired an outreach lab services business from University Hospitals in Ohio.
