Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre has announced the opening of the Peter Cipriano Centre for Seniors Health in Ontario, Canada, supported by a C$10m ($7.1m) donation from philanthropist Peter Cipriano.
The new senior healthcare centre aims to improve health and independence for seniors by delivering integrated, patient-centred care and support.
The facility introduces an outpatient model focused on helping older adults remain healthy and live independently as long as possible.
Care teams coordinate with geriatricians, hospital staff, primary care physicians, and community providers to develop tailored plans, with an environment designed to meet the needs of seniors.
Comprehensive geriatric assessments will be provided for patients older than 70 years who visit the emergency department but do not require urgent care, directing them to the appropriate level of support and easing hospital wait times.
Facilities at the Peter Cipriano Centre offer targeted programmes to promote aging at home, reduce hospital visits, and minimise readmissions.
The centre features senior-friendly design such as natural lighting, wider corridors, and handrails.
Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre CEO and president Andy Smith said: “The Peter Cipriano Centre for Seniors Health will advance Sunnybrook’s leadership in geriatric care, and is pivotal in our goal to lead system transformation with partners to improve access in the areas of specialised care.
“The centre’s unique integrated model enables collaboration within the hospital and with community partners, ensuring seniors receive comprehensive, compassionate care at every step of their patient journey.”
Sunnybrook Foundation president and CEO Kelly Cole said: “Philanthropy is a change maker in healthcare. When we partner with visionary philanthropists like Peter Cipriano — it empowers us to think bigger, push the boundaries of innovation and care, and create special spaces like the Peter Cipriano Centre, a powerful testament to the collective spirit and generosity of our donor community, who donated over C$23m.”
