Canada's British Columbia (BC) Government and Fraser Health Authority have announced plans for a new acute care tower on the Surrey Memorial Hospital campus. 

This project is due to move into the business planning phase, which will define its scope, budget, timelines, and procurement strategy in the coming 15-18 months. 

It will boost medical, paediatric, surgical, perinatal, and women’s health, as well as mental health and stroke care capacities on the hospital campus. 

Following government approval of the business plan, the procurement process will commence, paving the way for construction to begin. 

Simultaneously, the government will launch consultations with healthcare providers, Indigenous partners, the community, and local municipalities to facilitate business planning. 

Fraser Health president and CEO Dr Victoria Lee said: “This new acute care tower at the Surrey Memorial Hospital marks a significant milestone in our mission to meet the dynamic health needs of our growing population. 

“Our vision for the cutting-edge health services campus is to inspire innovation and excellence for our patients, families and communities and to be the best place to work for our teams.” 

Last June, the provincial government unveiled 30 actions to enhance healthcare access for Surrey residents, including a review of the Surrey Memorial Hospital site requirements.  

All these actions are part of a broader initiative to improve the region's healthcare infrastructure and address the rising demand for health services in Surrey, which is home to around 685,000 people.  

Earlier this month, the BC government also initiated decanting moves for new cardiac catheterisation suites, an additional interventional radiology suite, and a new renal haemodialysis building at Surrey Memorial Hospital.  

Pre-construction will start in the upcoming weeks on a new standalone renal haemodialysis facility at the northwestern corner of the Surrey Memorial Hospital campus. The facility is slated for completion in 2025.
