UMass Memorial Health, the clinical partner of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, has collaborated with Google Cloud to use predictive analytics for tracking patients eligible for advanced cardiometabolic therapies.

UMass Memorial Health will use artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and advanced data analytics to provide tailored care for patients with cardiometabolic conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease and obesity.

Heart disease is a major cause of mortality in the US, with a Centers for Disease Control report attributing one in every five deaths to it in 2021.

To address these chronic conditions, the partnership will use Google Cloud's AI and ML technologies, including Vertex AI, BigQuery, Healthcare Natural Language API and Looker, to develop tools to improve patient care and research advancement.

UMass Memorial Center Digital Health Solutions executive director and Cardiovascular Medicine Associate Professor Michael Hyder said: “Our mission is to provide the best possible care to our patients, and this partnership with Google Cloud is a significant step forward.

“By using data-driven insights to identify patients who would benefit from advanced cardiometabolic therapies, we aim to elevate the high standard of care we provide.”

UMass Memorial Health plans to create predictive analytics models to analyse extensive datasets, such as patient health records, biometric information and clinical data, to identify candidates for advanced cardiometabolic treatments.

Healthcare professionals at UMass Memorial Health will also be equipped with various tools to make informed, data-driven decisions to enhance the delivery of customised care plans.

Google Cloud Healthcare Strategy and Solutions global director Aashima Gupta said: “This partnership exemplifies the potential of technology and healthcare institutions working together to address complex medical challenges.

“We are honoured to partner with UMass Memorial Health to support their critical work in the field of cardiometabolic health, and we expect this to serve as a model for healthcare innovation globally.”
