Nearly 420 foundation piles, each with a 1.2m diameter and depth ranging from 16m to 24m, will be installed for the hospital.

The Government of Western Australia (WA) has announced the start of foundation works on the A$1.8bn ($1.17bn) Women and Babies Hospital project.

The project includes the new hospital at the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct in Murdoch, as well as two new multi-deck car parks.

Construction works also commenced on the first car park.

The construction milestone includes the start of foundation work using three 120-tonne piling rigs at the hospital site.

Nearly 420 foundation piles, each measuring 1.2m in diameter and reaching between 16m to 24m deep, will be installed for the hospital.

On the western car park site, 149 foundation piles will be bored to depths between 14 and 21m, using around 2,000m² of concrete. These piles will support the main structures of both the car park and the hospital.

Following the completion of piling works, construction will continue with the building of concrete foundations and above-ground structures for the hospital and car park.

This marks a key phase for the New Women and Babies Hospital project, designed to enhance services for families, newborns, and women across WA.

The new 12-storey hospital will feature inpatient facilities for maternity and gynaecology patients, outpatient clinics, a neonatology unit, operating theatres, and a family birth centre.

Being delivered by Webuild, the project also encompasses a major expansion of Osborne Park Hospital to improve services for women in the northern suburbs of Perth.

Georgiou Group is constructing the new six-storey western car park at the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct, offering approximately 1,500 staff parking bays and featuring a footbridge on the second level to connect with an adjacent car park.

WA transport minister Rita Saffioti said: “By consolidating parking and improving access, we're ensuring the Fiona Stanley Hospital precinct is future-proofed so it can continue to serve the community and its staff as it grows.

“The new multi-deck staff car park will provide around 1,500 parking bays and will be supported by local road changes on Jennalup Street and Winch Way once completed in mid-2027.”

In January 2025, the WA government released the tender for the Mullewa Hospital redevelopment’s main works, marking a step in the project’s progression.
