US-based non-profit healthcare system Catholic Health has appointed Joyce Markiewicz as its new president and CEO, replacing Mark Sullivan.

Markiewicz has worked for Catholic Health since 2005, initially holding the role of vice-president of Home Care Operations.

In 2006, she was named president and CEO of the group’s Home Care division, which experienced double-digit growth under her leadership.

Markiewicz was appointed as Catholic Health’s executive vice-president in 2015 and was subsequently made the group’s chief business development officer in 2019.

She will be the fifth president and CEO in the health system’s history.

The transition has been planned in consultation with Catholic Health’s Board of Trustees.

Catholic Health board chair Maureen Athoe said: “We’re extremely fortunate to have an outstanding, proven healthcare veteran for our next leader.

“Joyce’s strong advocacy for our patients, physicians and caregivers, track record of success, steady leadership style and devotion to Catholic Health’s mission made her the ideal person to serve as our next president and CEO.”

Catholic Health’s outgoing president and CEO Mark Sullivan has led the healthcare system since 2018, having worked for Catholic Health since 1994.

In his roles, he supported the roll-out of the group’s Epic electronic health records system and oversaw its response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sullivan said: “I’m excited for the next chapter at Catholic Health and handing the reigns to an incredible leader and person in Joyce Markiewicz.

“There is no doubt she will take the organisation to new levels while striving to ensure the community that entrusts us with its care has equitable access to high-quality healthcare.”

Markiewicz will take on her new roles on 1 September following Sullivan’s official exit on 31 August.

Earlier this year, Catholic Health announced plans to open Lockport Memorial Hospital at its Mount St Mary’s Hospital facility in New York next month.
