The government of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, has selected AW Edwards as the building contractor for the Ryde Hospital redevelopment project.

The project aims to provide enhanced healthcare facilities to the Ryde community, ensuring that local patients can get the care they need close to their home.

It is being delivered with an investment of around A$479m ($314m). Construction work on the hospital is expected to begin later this year.

The work will mainly include the demolition of outdated structures, the construction of new hospital buildings and the refurbishment of existing spaces.

The NSW Government will work with AW Edwards to minimise the impact of construction while keeping the hospital operational throughout the redevelopment process.

The redesigned hospital will feature a new and expanded emergency department and additional theatres, as well as additional adult overnight inpatient beds and expanded medical imaging services.

The project will incorporate existing services at the Ryde campus, including the Graythwaite Rehabilitation Centre and the historic Denistone House.

NSW Health Minister Ryan Park said: “I am really pleased the Ryde Hospital Redevelopment is moving ahead and will transform healthcare for the local community, providing the growing community the latest facilities and models of care.

“This project will expand capacity at the hospital, delivering more adult overnight beds, plus it’ll feature a brand-new ED, ICU, operating theatres, a custom-built ambulatory care centre and a paediatric short stay unit.

“This is a major redevelopment that will provide new and enhanced services within a modern, contemporary facility to ensure patients continue to receive the best possible care.”

In January last year, the NSW Government published its initial design concept for the Ryde Hospital redevelopment.

The first development application for the project was approved in June last year, while a second development application was filed with the Department of Planning and Environment in October.
