Torbay Hospital in the UK has inaugurated two new operating theatres dedicated to day surgery.

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, which provides health and social care services to local Torbay community, operates Torbay Hospital along with five community hospitals, stretching from Dawlish to Brixham.

The two new operating theatres have been established with an investment of approximately £15m ($18.9m).

According to a BBC report, one of the new theatres will specialise in eye surgery, while the other will handle general surgeries, including those addressing mobility concerns.

Development of these facilities is aimed at increasing surgical capacity by 4,500 procedures each year.

The day surgeries to be performed in these theatres will encompass a variety of specialities, including gynaecology, orthopaedics, breast surgery, and ear, nose and throat procedures.

This expansion is also expected to reduce the waiting lists for day surgery, while also enhancing the hospital’s overall ability to recruit additional medical staff.

BBC reported Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust chairman Sir Richard Ibbotson as saying that the strategic intent behind the development of these two operating theatres is “to start to balance up capacity and demand.”

The funding for the new operating theatres was sourced from the national Targeted Investment Fund (TIF).

Torbay Hospital day surgery clinical director Dr Theresa Hinde said: “What we are hoping to achieve is an extra 3,000 local anaesthetic cataract operations in one operating theatre and around 1,500 additional surgical procedures with a focus on breast and orthopaedic surgery in our second new theatre.”

In September 2022, Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust announced £4.99m capital investment for the construction of fourth endoscopy room and training facility at the Torbay Hospital.
