Piedmont Atlanta Hospital in the US has officially opened its expanded Jan & John Portman neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

The NICU, now a part of Grass Family Women’s Center, has been expanded under a broader renovation of the women’s centre at Piedmont Atlanta.

The broader renovation project, which includes modernised Labor & Delivery rooms, will eventually see the Grass Family Women’s Center occupy its own dedicated floor.

Compared to the former space, the new unit has tripled in size, offering private rooms and improved resources for families and care teams.

The Jan & John Portman NICU at Piedmont Atlanta, capable of providing level III care for newborns, now features a total of 23 rooms for individual babies as well as two rooms for multiples.

Design of the NICU has shifted from the previous open-bay concept to private rooms to enhance the care experience for families.

In addition, the expansion includes amenities like breast milk storage, laundry facilities, and sleeping quarters for on-call physicians, all conveniently located near the patient care area.

With the renovation, the entrances to the NICU and the standard nursery within the women’s centre are now separate.

Piedmont Atlanta CEO Patrick Battey said: “We are so glad to be able to give parents facing the difficult situation of a NICU stay the secluded, comfortable space they deserve to bond with the newest member of their family.

“Their surroundings now befit the exceptional medical care they are receiving.”

The Grass Family Women’s Center primarily specialises in delivering specialised and multi-disciplinary care.

It features improved access to natural daylight, larger patient rooms with the latest technologies, and quality spaces for families to gather.

The centre also offers private, well-appointed rooms throughout triage, labour, birth and family care, prioritising patients’ well-being.

In August 2022, Piedmont Rockdale Hospital in the US completed the $12.6m expansion and renovation project and opened a new 21-bed inpatient unit.

Compared to the former space, the new unit has tripled in size, offering private rooms and improved resources for families and care teams.
