Lifepoint Health’s business unit Lifepoint Rehabilitation and UCI Health, an academic health system, has commenced construction on a new inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Irvine, California, US.  

This 52-bed stand-alone hospital, UCI Health Rehabilitation Hospital, is being developed as part of a joint venture alliance between UCI Health and Lifepoint Rehabilitation announced in 2022.

The 68,000ft², two-storey hospital will have a range of units, including a dialysis suite, a specialised acquired brain injury unit, an imaging suite for onsite radiology, and multidisciplinary therapy gymnasiums featuring various therapeutic technologies.  

It will also have outdoor courtyards and additional spaces to support patients in regaining daily living skills. 

The hospital is designed to cater to patients with acute rehabilitation needs, including those recovering from stroke, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations, or some other conditions.

Additionally, the new medical campus will feature the Joe C. Wen & Family Center for Advanced Care, which is planned to open during the second quarter of this year, and the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and Ambulatory Care building, which will open this summer. 

Expected to open in 2025, UCI Health Rehabilitation Hospital will be jointly operated by UCI Health and Lifepoint Rehabilitation. 

It will be integrated into Lifepoint Rehabilitation’s network of over 40 inpatient rehabilitation facilities in the US. 

Once open, the new hospital is set to significantly expand the inpatient rehabilitation capacity of the health system, tripling the current availability.  

The hospital is also expected to generate more than 200 jobs in the region and meet the needs of over 1,200 patients annually.  

UCI Health physical medicine and rehabilitation chairman and rehabilitation unit medical director Jay Han said: “The new Rehabilitation Hospital represents a significant advancement in the continuum of care at UCI Health, offering exceptional rehabilitative care to the region.  

“This includes patients from Level I trauma centre, inpatient hospitals across Orange County and Irvine and those needing support from the comprehensive cancer centre, regional burn centre, and comprehensive stroke centre that UCI Health provides.” 

Lifepoint Rehabilitation, UW Health, and UnityPoint Health – Meriter recently announced plans to build an inpatient rehabilitation hospital in the greater Madison area in the US.
