The state government of New South Wales (NSW), Australia, has announced the start of construction work on a new palliative care unit at Wyong Hospital in the coming weeks, with the appointment of main works contractor Renascent Australia.
It is a component of the government’s A$93m ($60.59m) World Class End of Life Care programme.
New South Wales Health Minister Ryan Park said: “The Minns Labor Government is committed to ensuring people with life-limiting illnesses receive the highest quality end-of-life care at the right time, and in the right place.”
The facility will be housed within an existing building on the hospital’s eastern campus, which is set to undergo extensive remodelling.
The new unit will accommodate 12 palliative care bedrooms, each with an ensuite.
Additionally, the unit will offer communal areas, meeting spaces, and outdoor environments, all designed to cater to the evolving palliative care needs of the region.

By GlobalDataMain works construction is set to begin after the completion of preparatory works, encompassing service relocation to other areas of the campus,.
The design of the new unit has been a collaborative effort, involving consultations with Central Coast Local Health District palliative care staff, carers, and community representatives.
Detailed design features bedrooms with interior finishes, balcony, and windows that open onto private courtyards.
The unit will also include a family room with dining facilities, a central garden with preserved trees, and a communal outdoor area.
Central Coast Minister and Wyong Member David Harris said: “The new unit will provide the best quality care for people who need it the most and will be a valuable addition to Central Coast Local Health District’s existing palliative care services, including the palliative care unit at Gosford Hospital and in-home services to meet both patient and their family needs.”
The project, which is slated for completion in late 2026, follows the NSW Government’s recent announcement of the construction start for the Warrawong Community Health Centre.
